Sometimes they’re biting, sometimes you wait.

Sometimes you wait a very long time.

Such is the reality for any kind of fishing, but when you’re ice fishing, you’re waiting in frigid temperatures. So frigid that you should constantly disturb your fishing area to stop creeping chunks of ice that could envelop your fishing pole.

Still, you won’t catch the ice anglers who were out on Lake Loveland on Wednesday complaining about the hardships of the sport.

“It’s really the same thing for winter fishing as it is for fly fishing,” Loveland resident and fly fishing guide Phil Small said. “You just dress in layers.”

It also helps to have a hut with a heater to retreat to when it’s time to warm up. Lori and Ronnie Bainter, in town from Aztec, N.M., had that option and even their dog, Roxy, had to take advantage of it from time to time.

“I work up here and we’re just finding things to do on our time off,” Ronnie Bainter said. “We tried it last year and kind of got hooked on it.”

There are a number of areas to ice fish in the area. In fact, Small said, you can set up anywhere there’s public water and there’s enough ice. Boyd Lake is popular, so is Lone Tree Reservoir in Berthoud.

“I go where the perch are biting,” Loveland resident Rick Suess said.

The perch were biting in Lake Loveland on Wednesday, or at least the first time Suess headed out in the morning. He dug two holes, caught four fish and went back out for the afternoon.

The thing about ice fishing is that it’s completely unpredictable and it’s not as if you can see them jumping or have any other way, really, to gauge their behavior.

You just wait.

“The fish in a lake have to go looking for food, so they just cruise, versus river fish who wait for food to come to them,” Small said.

On New Year’s Eve, Small caught more than a dozen trout from the 8-inch hole he drilled in Lake Loveland.

On Wednesday? Zilch.

He told the Bainter’s, who he’d just met on Wednesday due to the proximity of their holes, that they may need to either switch bait or move their holes. The new acquaintances laughed together and shared tips on how to keep warm, which can absolutely include Amaretto and Bailey’s.

And if moving position doesn’t help, ice anglers say it’s still worth the effort, the set-up, the bundling up.

“Sometimes it’s more about meeting nice people,” Small said.
